Activity 4. 1: Web Quest - Web 3.0

Type "Web 3.0" into your chosen search engine. Then, using the facts you discovered throughout your search, answer the following questions.

1. How Web 3.0 differs from Web 2.0? Discuss the prominent features of Web 3.0.

Web 3.0 is the third generation of the internet and is called so because it is totally different from Web 2.0. The prime difference is in decentralization; whereas Web 2.0 is based on platforms and servers, which can be centralized, such as social media giants, it uses blockchain technology to have data spread across multiple nodes, thereby making it safe and giving users control of their personal information.

The prominent features of web 3.0 are the following:

Semantic Web - This provides improved data interaction through better user experience and improved search results.

Artificial Intelligence - Through artificial intelligence, user's experiences are more personalized with the use of algorithms.

Decentralization - Ownership and control over the users' data is remained private.

Interconnectivity - Interconnection are improved as digital devices are able to communicate flawlessly.

Trustless Systems - Central authorities are irrelevant in users' interaction between one another.

2. What are its importance? How it will benefit our lives?

Key benefits include:

User Empowerment: People have more control over their data, which they can sell or trade without losing ownership.

Improved Privacy: Users can interact online with decreased chances of surveillance or unauthorized collection of data using decentralized systems.

Improved user experience: Semantic technologies and AI bring about the delivering of more relevant and exciting online activities because of the presence of more tailored content delivery.

Economic opportunities: It develops new business models through the mechanisms of decentralized finance, that is, DeFi, and token economies through which people can participate equitably in the digital economy.

3. What are the risks and threats of Web 3.0?

Risks and Threats of Web 3.0

Web 3.0 also has a number of risks and challenges despite its benefits:

Security Vulnerabilities: Decentralization reduces some of the risks but brings about other security issues, including bugs or vulnerabilities in smart contracts that can be exploited by hostile actors.

Complexity of Use: The move to decentralized systems may confuse some users who are not familiar with blockchain technology or cryptocurrency, thereby excluding them from the benefits of Web 3.0.

Regulatory Challenges: The decentralized nature of Web 3.0 complicates regulatory oversight, thereby raising concerns about compliance with existing laws regarding data protection and financial transactions.

Environmental Impact: The energy consumption related to blockchain networks, especially the proof-of-work mechanism, brings with it environmental issues that will need to be addressed with increased adoption.

In conclusion, although technology has brought about significant advancements in our society, it must be put in mind that it was and will always remain a double-edged sword that could inflict us with more than what we think is possible. Hence, it is essential to understand that proper usage of technology is relevant and would never go outdated.
